Summary0007391: Option "Do Not show Tabs unless multiple tabs are used" needed
DescriptionWe made a poll asking users if they want "Ability to show all Tabs Toolbar even only single Tab is used". Here is the current result:
- Show Tabs always - 6 votes
- Do Not show Tabs unless multiple tabs are used - 11 votes
- Make this configurable in Options - 90 votes.

As you could see, the largest number of votes got the third solution with the configurable option. Instead, you currently have implemented solution with the smallest number of votes, which is far less then with the third solution.

The current solution in Vista with tabs that are in the same row with the menu bar is nice since they are both placed in the title bar. However, with Win XP we have the large empty wasted area when we have displayed just one tab. Here you could see the difference between builds 1346 and 1348:

It would be nice if you add suggested configurable option ("Do Not show Tabs unless multiple tabs are used") as it have Firefox, Total Commander and many other programs. So, if some user choose that option, you should display tabs as it was in 1346, but if user turn off that option, you should display tabs as it is now in 1349.

How about:

Tools > Options > Appearance > : First entry
[x] Always show the tab bar
Tooltip: Always displays tabs--even when only a single tab is open

It would be really nice if you add such option, not matter how you call it. However, I prefer the longer version ("Always displays tabs, even when only a single tab is open") to be displayed on the Option sheet, if there is enough room for it of course, because there are users that have tooltips turned off.

Escalated to include new strings in MM4 prior to string freeze.

MM developers, please could you tell me what is a point of this new option which you have added in 1352 ("Always show the tab bar"), if we cannot place toolbars in the same row with the menu bar as before? We still cannot preserve the vertical space when we have just one tab displayed as we had before:

Beside of that, if user has the mentioned option turned off, there is not any possibility to add new tab. 1348 at least had that possibility choosing the related option from the context menu by right-click on some node. Is it so hard to add the option "Add new tab" to the View or File menu? For example, Firefox and Total Commander have such option in the main menu.

Test note re. proposed fix:

1) Toolbars should be dockable in the same row as the main menu for XP, since main menu isn't integrated with the Titlebar.

2) The 'New Tab' command will be added at View > New Tab (between Refresh and Toolbars)
