Summary0002025: File Associations: .pls should be associated by default
DescriptionSince .PLS files are used for streaming audio, if the user clicks a shoutcast stream it should play in MM by default. Currently it doesn't.

To fix this, the default file associations dialog that's run by the installer should associated .pls files with MM by default.

Tested in build 926 as follows:

1) uninstall MM 2.5 --> pls files are associated with iRiver tool
2) install MM 2.3 (for testing purposes) and run once
3) install MM 2.5
-->PLS files are still associated with iRiver!!

I'm guessing that the installer only changes associations if associations have not previously been configured. This accounts for the questions on the forum about this issues (users indicated that .pls files weren't associated to MM).

I tested this and reviewed the installer code, but don't see any problem with this, _if_ .pls is checked in the installer it's properly associated with MM. It can be checked in Registry: HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.pls.

I retested this and found:

1) Install MM 2.5.1.927 (no previous install of MM) --> MM is the associated app to .pls
2) Uninstall MM 2.5.1 --> iRiver Plus is the associated app
3) Install MM 2.3.1 --> iRiver Plus is the associated app
4) Install MM 2.5.1 --> iRiver Plus is the associated app!!

Note: I've copied the relevant portion of the registry and posted it to the ftp server.

Assigned to Rusty for further review (it works fine for me).

As described at http://www.mediamonkey.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=8535 other users are experiencing this problem as well. I wonder, though, whether this may just be the same problem as in bug 2398 (file settings lost).

I'd need a debug log in case user can't associate files.

I retested this and confirmed my previous results, but also found out exactly where the problem is occuring:

1) Install MM 2.3.1
-Run Regedit --> no .pls association with MediaMonkey
2) Run MM 2.3.1
-Run Regedit --> no .pls association with MediaMonkey
3) Install MM 2.5.2.948
-Run Regedit --> there is a .pls association with MediaMonkey (as expected)
4) Install MM 2.5.2.948 debug
-Run Regedit --> there's still a .pls association with MediaMonkey (as expected)
5) Run MM 2.5.2.948 debug
-Run Regedit --> the .pls associate with MediaMonkey has been removed!!!

So in essence, the installer is doing exactly as it's supposed to, however, the application is undoing whatever the installer had done!

I've created a debug log of step 5), and posted to the ftp server.

Fixed in build 949.
 - This could have happened in some specific cases by misunderstanding between the installer and MM.
