Summary0020440: Grid view should have displayed header and sorting ability for track-oriented views (Folders and Location)
DescriptionIf I have a folder with many files by different artists (i.e. singles that don't belong to albums), I would like to be able to sort them by different criteria, just as with the files in List view. At least by Artist and Title, but maybe even by Genre, Date, Original Date and Added.

Sorting by attributes that aren't visible caused confusion in the past--that's why in the Album grid view it's only sortable by Album Attributes.

Well, almost three years passed since I opened this issue and I really don't remember what I was talking about. However, I don't think that I meant on Grid (by Album), but on Grid view.

I just discovered that if I switch to the List view, set the wanted sorting and switch back to the Grid view, I will get files in the grid sorted as I wanted.

The workaround that I described in my previous post is not too much intuitive and requires more steps than someone would want. It would be much better if you add a header to the Grid view with the ability to add/remove fields to it, which could be used to set sorting order, just like with headers in the other views. List view have it. List (by Album) view have it, Grid (by Album) view have it. It is only Grid view without header.

Sorts should generally only be on fields that are visible in the view. That's why the number of sorts in current Griid views is so limited.
A better solution to this issue is described ot 0020441

Your current sorting in Grid view is not intuitive. It is done on fields that are not visible in that view, but in view that was previously displayed, as I described already. It is not intuitive if you need to sort tracks by switching to another view like List and back again to Grid to get tracks in Grid sorted as you want.

My suggestion that requires added header to the Grid view is more simple. In that way, the sorting fields would be visible in the view.

Again, I am talking about Grid view that is based on tracks, not about Grid (by Album).

The Grid view for track-oriented views (Folders and Location nodes) should have header that could allow setting of sorting order, just as Grid (videos) view for Video / All videos node.

It is fine that you have added ability for sorting of Grid view in b3526, but its configuration is possible only through the Configure View dialog box that requires multiple clicks and several opened dialog boxes. It would be much easier if the Grid view has displayed header that would be available directly on the main panel.

As I said, Grid (videos) view for Video / All videos node is similar to the Grid view for track-oriented views (Folders and Location nodes) and it already has a header. Such difference in its look is not consistent.
