Summary | 0020505: All panel elements could have simpler and more intuitive way to open/close/move
Description | 1) There are many programs that could have displayed multiple panels. Many of these programs allows grouping of those panels into their "parent" panels. Some of these programs allows opening/closing those "parent" panels, i.e. groups of sub-panels, just like MM5 is doing with its Left/Right/Bottom panels, but I don't know of any of these programs that have an option for that in the main menu. However, almost all of these programs have options to open/close the individual sub-panels (or panel elements how they are called in MM) with the corresponding items in their View or Window menu. Let say that I want to open Preview panel element in MM. - click View; - click Layout; - check Preview; - click OK. That are 4 clicks. If MM has the Preview option in the View menu, that would be just two clicks. So, my suggestion is to remove Left/Right/Bottom panels from the menu and add individual elements to it, i.e. Tree/Playing/Preview/Player. There are not much more elements than panels and menu would not be enlarged too much. In my opinion, opening/closing of individual panel elements is more frequently used action than opening/closing the whole panel groups. 1a) You could keep the Left Panel / Right Panel toolbar buttons (where is the Bottom Panel toolbar button?), but they are taking too much space on the toolbar. However, if you make the splitters between side panels and main panel visible, you could add one small button on their center which would allow closing of these panels. In that case, the closed panel should have splitter visible on the side of the main panel even when the panel is closed, to be able to open that panel by click on the same button. 1b) You could keep the Layout page in the Options dialog for configuring which panel element belongs to which panel. However, the more intuitive way to determine which panel element belongs to which panel that is implemented in many programs would be by drag&drop of the panel element title bars to the wanted side of window. 2) The most intuitive way to close any panel element is if it has the close button on its top-right corner. Almost all programs known to me that have panels have such buttons. That would be just one click to close a panel element. Currently, if I want to close the Preview panel element, I need to use 4 clicks, just as when I want to open it.
