Summary0020506: Using "Panel" term is inconsistent and confusing
DescriptionThere is a lot of confusion what is a term "panel" used for. Is it for Left/Right/Bottom? Is it for Tree/Playing/Preview? Or maybe something else? You refer to these Tree/Right/Preview as "panel elements" on the Layout page of Options dialog box, but I don't know anybody is using the term e.g. "Preview panel element" - everybody is calling it just "Preview panel".

To avoid the confusion I suggest:
1. The existing "panel elements" should be called just "panels", e.g. Preview panel;
2. The existing "panels" could be called e.g. "sidebars", as is the case with Firefox and VSCode, e.g. Left sidebar.

The top/bottom sides of window could also have their sidebars, in my opinion that term should not be reserved only for vertical edges.

That leave us only with the "Main panel (bottom)". I don't know how that "panel" could be called, but I think you are referring it like that only on the Layout page, to allow users to have player only beneath the main tracklist, but not beneath Left/Right panels. Honestly, is there anyone who is using that option? I think that all users have player in the bottom panel, eventually in the top player, but very unlikely in the Main panel (bottom).

I think that 'sidebar' is generally used always just for left/right bars..
So for the 'Bottom panel' we would need to use "Bottom bar" terminilogy..

Assigned to Rusty to review/decide the wording..

So I guess the request is to change it as follows?

Configure layout (current tab)

 Drag available elements to a panel to be displayed, or to re-order them.
-->
Drag elements to the area of the UI where they should display, or to re-order them.

Top panel --> Top bar . . . . . . . Left panel ---> Left sidebar

Main panel (bottom) --> Center . . . . . . Right panel --> Right sidebar

Bottom panel ---> Bottom bar

Note: if we take this approach, we would also have to hardcode the Center so that it contains the following:
[x] Library

If you implement this suggestion it should be applied anywhere, not only on the Layout page of the Options dialog box, but also in View menu and tooltips of Left/Right panel toobar buttons...

I wouldn't rename Main panel (bottom) to Center, because if user hide Left or Right panel, it wouldn't be in center, right? However, I don't like the current term "Main panel (bottom)" either since it can cause misleading in users thinking that the whole Main panel with the filelist could be hidden, as I mentioned in 0020420. How about "Bottom side of Main area" or "Bottom side of View area"?

By the way, if I understand your use of the "Library" term correctly, it could be added to the Center only if you implement an ability to hide the whole view (e.g. with filelist) in Main panel, which you refused in 0020420. And, the view of Main panel is not limited only on Library, since it could show e.g. Web or Folders nodes that are available even with the empty Library.
