Summary0021216: Multiple instances of 'MediaMonkey 2024' in Personalization > Taskbar
DescriptionAs reported at ticket 7240 and at https://www.mediamonkey.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=106660 , in Windows 11, Personalization > Taskbar can contain multiple instances of 'MediaMonkey 2024' (in one case 20 redundant entries).

At the aforementioned ticket and forum post, Peke indicated that this behavior is caused by Windows 11 and how it interacts with Tray icons that display custom tooltips to communicate information (e.g. track metadata). However, on my laptop personalization settings, MediaMonkey 2024 is the only app that exhibits this behavior despite the fact that other apps such as Process Explorer use custom tooltips but don't exhibit this problem.

Isn't there a way to prevent the interaction of Windows 11 & MMW from creating these redundant entries?

This happens for every app that is installed in more locations:

1) install Snagit to C:\Program Files (x86)\snagit\
2) install Snagit to C:\Program Files (x86)\snagit2\
=> there are two 'snagit' entries in Personalization > Taskbar

3) uninstall C:\Program Files (x86)\snagit2\
=> now there is only one entry as expected

The same happens with MediaMonkey (every install/uninstall adds/removes one entry)

BTW: I have tested this also with installing and running Portable install which adds +1 entry, but removing the Portable install (just deleting the install folder) results in -1 entry, i.e the entry is removed and thus there is no bug

User at ticket # 7240 supplied additional tests, but I still can't replicate on Windows 10 it looks like Turning off Taskbar Icon is one of steps to replicate.

User is _not_ right that
[x] Always show try icon
settings should be unified with Win11 taskbar's settings, because MM icon can still be in the tray although it is not on the taskbar..

Nevertheless the double-entries should be prevented/fixed...

It seems Peke was right that once the InitialTooltip value differs then a double-entry is created

This is also the reason why Skype icon is constantly moving from the taskbar back to the hidden tray icon area (as it changes the tooltip)..
i.e. it is more Win11 Microsoft's bug..

OK, user seems to be right that disabling '[..] Always show tray' icon, changed tooltip, restarted MediaMonkey and enabling '[x] Always show tray' icon creates the duplicate entry
And I haven't been able to create the duplicate entry without touching the 'Always show tray' settings..
