Summary0021575: Ability to mass edit artwork
DescriptionTaken from "MM 2026 planned features document" :

1) It would be useful to add method to remove external Artwork not found.
Quite a few users end up with removed Artwork files, but MM still has them associated
2) Option to delete external Artworks if embedded exists
3) Option to mass move Cover (front) to top (change Artwork order)
4) Option to mass prioritize embedded or external Artwork (change Artwork order)
5) Option to embed or extract Artwork for selected files

This could be achieved by renaming current 'Edit tags' menu to 'Edit tags / artwork'
and then right-click a group of files > 'Edit tags / artwork' > Artwork > would include otpions like:
'Remove external artwork not found'
'Delete external Artworks if embedded exists'
'Move 'Cover (front)' at top'
'Move embedded artwork at top'
'Move external artwork at top'
'Embeed external artwork'
'Extract embedded artwork to file'

I haven't tested all of this functionality, so please review these suggestions carefully. From an overall design perspective, I find that this functionality is too difficult to use as currently designed. What I mean is that users typically want artwork in their library to be stored in a certain manner but the current approach:
a) forces the user into multiple operations to clean their artwork. e.g. (select all tracks, remove dead artwork links; select all tracks, move covers to top; select all tracks, etc...)
b) fills up the context menu unnecessarily and includes functions that should only apply to the entire library (e.g. rebuild artwork cache)
c) doesn't allow the user to make these edits from a location in which they can see whether these changes are required! i.e. the only location from which a user can determine whether any of these edits are required is currently the Properties>Arts dialog--in any other portion of the UI there's no way to determine whether these edits are needed or not.
d) The Properties dialog isn't even that useful for this for determining whether changes are needed because it can only be used on a file by file basis, and what's needed is some way to determine this on a global basis. e.g. something like Files to Edit > Inconsistent artwork that displays tracks that don't match a set of defined artwork preferences. For instance, if a user wants tagged artwork to be saved as the first image, then the user should be able to configure this setting and MM should save artwork in the configured manner. And the 'Inconsistent artwork' functionality should show all cases where artwork isn't saved in this manner so that it can be fixed (much in the same way as the user sets tag settings and can find tracks that have inconsistent tags).

1) Before I suggest a revised design, here are suggested wording changes, and changes to the order of commands should we retain the current design (not preferred):
Remove external artwork not found...
-->
Remove external image(s) if inaccessible...

Delete external Artworks if embedded exists...
-->
Remove external image(s) if tagged image exists...

Embed external artwork...
-->
Move external image(s) to tag...

Extract embedded artwork to file...
-->
Move tagged image(s) to file...

Move Cover (front) at top...
-->
Re-position Cover (front) to top...

Move embedded artwork at top...
-->
Re-position tagged image(s) to top...

Move external artwork at top...
-->
Re-position external image(s) to top...

Convert image(s)...

Rebuild artwork cache...
--> I think that this command would be better in Manage database > Maintenance >

2) A simple change to deal with issues a) and b):
Menu > Manage artwork...
-->
Opens a dialog:

Manage artwork
--------------------------------------
Adjust artwork for the selected tracks:

[x] Remove external image(s) if inaccessible...
[ ] Remove external image(s) if tagged image exists...

[ ] Move images between files and tags:
 . (o) Move external image(s) to tag...
 . ( ) Move tagged image(s) to file...

[x] Position 'Cover (front)' first...
[ ] Position _[tagged image(s))]|external image(s)_v_ higher...

[ ] Convert images to preferred format (JPG: 500px) [Change...]

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . [OK] [Cancel])

3) To address issue c),

i) in Properties > Artwork, we can add a subset of commands (i.e. only the ones that are relevant) when right-clicking on images:
 - Move external image(s) to tag (for file images only)
 - Move tagged image(s) to file (for tagged images only)
 - Convert to preferred format (JPEG: 500 px) (note: it displays the setting re. preferred artwork)

4)
i) Update Files to Edit > Inconsistent Artwork node so that it presents all artwork that doesn't meet a set of defined settings. Once this is implemented, the Manage Artwork dialog would make a lot more sense.

In order to configure defined settings, Options > Tags & Playlists > Artwork would have to be updated to define preferred defaults. e.g.

Image location: _Save image to tag (if possible) otherwise save to file folder | Save image to file folder | Save image to tag (if possible) and file folder_
Image filename:
 . First image per Album/Series: _albumart.jpg_
 . Format for multiple images: _$if(<Album>, <Album>,<Filename>).thm
 [x] Convert artwork to _JPG_
 . . Max. resolution: _500_px
 . . Quality: _90%_

-->

Image location: _Save image to tag (if possible) otherwise save to file folder | Save image to file folder | Save image to tag (if possible) and file folder_
Image filename:
 . First image per Album/Series: _albumart.jpg_

Image order:

With the above settings, it should be possible for MM to both:
- Save artwork according to a defined set of settings (e.g. when saving new Artwork, MM could be configured to save 'Cover (front)' as the first image (currently, it doesn't. e.g. add 'Cover (back)' --> it's saved as the first image before 'Cover (front)')

- Find Inconsistent Artwork (in Files to Edit) that doesn't match these settings so that the user can then use the 'Manage Artwork' functionality to adjust it.

Note: this still isn't perfect as it doesn't provide a mechanism to configure MM to save compilation album art with original per-track artwork in tags, but Album Art as a linked file.
