| Summary | 0021869: Cache external library resource for offline use | ||||
| Description | In <MM5 there was feature called "Virtual CD" that allowed users to Cache CD tracks to PC and when played MM would use cached track to play it instead of requesting source to be accessible (CD to be inserted) and then playstats would reflect on original source. Feature was removed in MM5 due the various issues it caused and evolution of PC where access to Audio CD library was not needed and many PCs now days do not even have tech specs to support CD/DVD/BD-ROM drives (5.25" slot for desktop, or laptops that are too thin to contain physical drive within its enclosure). As devices are getting smaller and smaller users are more oriented to external sources like NAS, Cloud, external enclosures to contain media data, we should rethink re implementing similar feature to allow users to cache externally available resources locally without requiring internet connection, additional hardware. We already do that for Services plugins where MM is source for cloud storage, but not from removable sources like DAS, SAN, NAS or external HDDs/CDs/DVDs Some info: https://www.techtarget.com/searchstorage/answer/The-difference-between-SAN-and-NAS https://stonefly.com/blog/san-vs-nas-vs-das-a-closer-look/ Suggested implementation: - Like it was with Virtual CD feature Dedicated space on Local HDD that will store Cached Files, possible with double extension (eg. .mp3.cached) so that MM and other apps can't accidentally scan them as regular files. - Dedicated Options page in general MM options and/or within services plugins options (similar to Auto Convert for sync plugins) | ||||
