Summary0022409: Grid (by Album) should have ability to sort by Original date
DescriptionIt is already mentioned in another issue (0016714) that is marked as resolved, but I cannot reopen that issue (Access Denied).

I think Original date should be added to the sorting of albums in Grid (by Album) view. For example, I could tag an album with Original date of the LP release, and Date of the CD (extended/remastered) release, and then I would like to sort albums as LPs, not as CDs.

Original date should be also added to the Choose fields dropdown options in Configure View dialog that is implemented in b3526 (0020441 issue).

Grid (by Album) should be able to sort by 'Original date'
This can be fixed in the manner described for configuring sort fields at 0020441.

There is currently no such album property as original date, albums are not grouped by original date. So sorting by property not present is not possible now.

Where is defined a list of properties that are exclusively used for albums? Why don't you add Original date to it?

There is no such list. MM simply uses Album Title + Album Artist + Date. It has worked this way for ages, and I haven't noticed any complaints, as it makes perfect sense. Later, we added the ability to enter an album description (stored only in the database). The album rating is just a precomputed value based on the ratings of individual tracks.
The Original Date stored in a track is related to that specific track. It represents the date when the original recording of the track was released and is not necessarily tied to the same album, as the track could have originally been recorded for a different album. Some users use it to indicate the original release date of the album, while others use it for the original release date of the track or recording.

You are not simply using just Album Title + Album Artist + Date, you are using Rating as well. The Rating is a track property, not album property. Why it should be used for computation of an album property, but not Original date?

The Original date stored in track is related to that specific track just as any other tag, like Date, and how will you use that info is just up to you. If all tracks from the album have the same Original date, it makes perfect sense that such album could be sorted by that value.

You haven't noticed any complaints because you are not reading what is posted. There is a link above in the Additional information. And I am complaining. Even you admit that "some users use it to indicate the original release date of the album".

By the way, here is what Google AI could say about "release date tag in mediamonkey":
"MediaMonkey stores and handles release dates primarily through the standard Date field (which handles full dates or just the year) and the Original Date / Original Year field for initial historical releases."
