| Description | Users point out that at the end of a track and beginning of a new one, CPU utilization spikes dramatically and system responsiveness decreases. I measured this and found that: -CPU utilization goes from 3% to ~20% -for the 2 seconds that this occurs, the system stops updating typed input to the screen (as I type, a buffer is updated, but the text does not display on the screen). Users indicated that this was new to RC4, but I'm have not confirmed it. It is a fairly serious problem, though. | ||||

Assigning to Rusty for further investigation. It seems that the issue is driver-related, since it has disappeared completely after doing various tests with different buffer, crossfading, and h/w acceleration settings. Nonetheless, the problem is specific to MM--and occurred with both DirectSound and WaveOut plugins across OGG/FLAC/MP3 formats (though MP3 was the worst offender, and DirectSound slightly worse than waveout). Users have indicated that they believe the problem was introduced in RC4, so we need to check whether Reboot/Re-install will re-introduce the problem. |

Retested build 1109: No lag + Popup appears immediately at start of playback Retested build 1116: No lag + Popup appears immediately at start of playback Retested build 1120 (not debug): Lag is introduced + Popup appears 2 seconds after playback starts! Retested build 1120 (debug): Lag is introduced + Popup appears 2 seconds after playback starts! So there is definitely a bug introduced in the most recent build that causes these combination of behaviours, and it doesn't appear to be specific to the non-debug build. |
