Summary | 0004891: Main window default layout improvements
Description | I installed MM on a clean machine and found out that the default layout has several problems: 1. Album Art window has non-square (i.e. rectangular with uneven sides) layout and it doesn't look good. I wonder whether we shouldn't simply hide this window by default, particularly now that we have special AA modes in the tracklist? 2. Main Tree is very narrow, resulting in the need of horizontal scrollbar. I'd make it at least 50% wider. 3. Personally I prefer Now Playing window to be docked below Main Tree. We could consider this as well. 4. We should test the resulting layout on various screen sizes/resolutions.

1. I think that we _should_ show the album art window, however, MM should force a square aspect ratio (I thought we had a bug for this, but I can't find it). i.e. when the use adjusts either width or height, the other edge should automatically resize to maintain a square aspect ratio. 2. The width should default so that the margin is just to the right of the Radio icon in the shorcuts toolbar. That won't always be wide enough, but it's a good starting point, especially considering that users may start using the Track Browser more once multiple libraries are displayed in the tree. 3. I think the current layout is preferable for playlist composition. Also, I don't think that it looks great at the bottom due to the verticle title bar and the menubar that is 3/4 empty in that layout. |

1. I see what you mean, but I'm not sure whether square aspect ratio is always preferable (e.g. when user wants tree to be wide enough, but not AA window to be too tall). So, maybe in order to handle the original problem (i.e. MM appearance on the first start) we could on the first start only make sure that the AA window look reasonably, i.e. when it's too narrow, we could make it square, or at least to some 4:3 edge ratio. 2. Agreed. 3. Ok, although I prefer another way, let's leave it. It could possibly make sense to make some poll in forum about several screenshots, in order to see what users prefer most. 4. When other changes are made, I'd like to do this. We should make sure that MM looks good when started on wide screens, high-res screens, etc. |

1. This has been raised a number of times by users, but I see your point as well. A possible solution would be to add a right-click config option (enabled by default): [x] Lock Aspect Ratio |

Assigning to Petr to implement 2. and check out whether 1. could be reasonably well implemented along the suggested lines. |

2. fixed in 1193 5. by default MM would to show up (on first start) with size of ScreenWidth-50 x ScreenHeight-50. So MM will be tall enough even on high resolution. |

I started up a fresh instance of MM and found that while the aspect ratio is locked, it seems to be a very odd ratio to use. The art box is much taller than it is wide, see attached screenshot. |

Tested 1. in 1226 and the AA window still doesn't default to 1:1 ratio on a clean install. Also: 6. The Now Playing node doesn't have the # column enabled by default 7. The '#' column is much too wide by default in both the NP node and the NP Window--it should just be wide enough to show 'xy.' (i.e. big enough for 999 tracks with the '.' obscured). |
