Summary | 0001432: Ability to edit classifications/properties of currently playing track
Description | Users need to have the ability to easily edit properties/classifications of the currently playing track. This needs to be done in a manner that is consistent between Properties in general (using the Properties dialog), and classification properties (using the categorization toolbar). This would allow users to: 1) Edit properties of the currently playing track using Metadata from the 'Album Browser'. 2) Edit any properties as tracks are playing. If you accept this arguement, then we can think of the functionality working something along the following lines: The Properties panel would have a '[ ] Lock to Now Playing' option which would cause: -the active track to switch whenever a new track starts playing ONLY if no edits have been made that haven't been commited -the 'back' and 'forward' buttons to go through the 'Now Playing' list, rather than the active dialog The 'lock to now playing' option would be enabled/disabled depending on how the user accessed the functionality--e.g.: -Attempt to edit property in Now Playing--> enabled -Attempt to edit property in any other Node--> disabled -View: Properties--> disabled -View: Album Browser (or whatever else we call this tab in the properties dialog)--> enabled Assuming one agrees with all of the above, the categorize toolbar should be implemented in a similar manner: Mode1: Modify selected track(s) (active on selected tracks) Mode2: Modify Now Playing track This could be configured via a combo button, so that the toolbar can be anywhere. Default behaviour would vary depending on the active node: Now playing: defaults to Mode2 Other nodes: defaults to Mode1

JIRI: 1432 However, my biggest problem with the proposed solution is that there are several problems in the way how to implement it. E.g. if user starts editing of properties just after the active track has changed to a new track, he actually edits another track than he expects! JIRI: I think that Album Art is a different case and MM cannot guess which mode user prefers. I don't think that you can prevent the problem I described. The sequence of steps could be like: 1. User opens properties dialog. 2. He goes to classification sheet. 3. Track changes. 4. Now user isn't sure what he's actually editing. Russell: Simple means of dealing with the issue you describe is to have the title bar contain the Track Filename. . but anyhow, I see that this could be complex and would require more discussion, so let's defer post 2.3. |
