Summary | 0001573: Portable Device Configuration is confusing, especially for existing users
Description | Synchronization configuration is confusing in the sense that Plugins map to synchronization profiles, but this isn't obvious to the user. e.g. : a) if the user clicks 'Options' from the Synchronization button, it is not at all obvious what they are configuring (i.e. it's not obvious that they're configuring a synchronization profile that is specific to the device plugin name that appears in the title bar). b) it is sometimes impossible to configure the desired profile from the 'Options' entry via the synchronization button (e.g. on my system the General plugin is configured and I was trying to configure the H-xxx profiles, but couldn't do so in an obvious manner--no matter what I did, clicking 'options' always configured the 'General' plugin and not the H-xxx plugin. There needs to be a means of configuring which plugin/profile to use. A couple of simple changes can resolve these issues: a) Change title bar to: Device Profile: <device plugin> b) On that screen provide some means of allowing the user to change the Device Plugin Profile that is being changed. The best option would be a dropdown list, but this may be complex because it would introduce an in-place editing metaphor (i.e. if the user would make changes and then switch the Device Plugin, it would be unclear whether or not to save changes).

It currently work as follows: - if no device is connected to PC, Options dialog is openned and user can select which device to configure from the list of available plug-ins. - if a device is connected, directly the device configuration dialog is openned. I think that this is correct and logical. The only problem I see is when two devices are connected to PC at the same time. In this case there currently isn't a way to select which one to choose directly from the Synch toolbar button. This wasn't fixed yet because I think that it won't be interesting for many users. This could be fixed by showing all connected devices in the Synch button drop-down menu and add a check-mark to the 'active' device. This way user could choose which is the device he works with now. |

OK, now I understand the problem. So really there are 2 separate issues: 1) Problem a) which can resolve 'immediately' by simply changing the wording of the title bar to -- Device Profile: <device plugin> 2) Problem b) which can more accurately be described as 'Impossible to select which device to configure/select for synchronization'. This bug we can defer (hopefully--we'll see during the beta). I'll move this to a new bug. |
