Summary | 0020232: Tablet mode: Menus can't always be closed and are duplicative
Description | When in landscape mode on a large screen, the navigation menu sometimes persists when the user doesn't expect it to: 1) When launching Playing view, it normally appears in full screen with the Navigation menu collapsing as soon as the user taps on the artwork. BUT if the user collapses the Playing view and then reopens in by tapping on the artwork in the miniplayer, then the menu becomes ephemeral (and a 'fullscreen' icon appears in the Playing view bar to allow the user to switch back to the 'normal' mode of operation). This is confusing to the user because: - it's unclear why MM starts functioning differently - it's unclear how to get rid of the menu 2) When the user navigates to the Home menu, the Navigation menu continues to display even though it pretty much duplicates everything in the Home menu. The simplest solution to both issues might be for the navigation menu to never persist in landscape mode.

Regarding the first issue: When in tablet mode, the menu 'bar' that appears on the left can be closed in some cases, and can't in others, and users don't understand why. This is best explained with a couple of cases: 1 Open MMA in tablet mode: --> Menu cannot be collapsed! 2 Expand the microplayer --> Playing view appears (partial screen) and menu still cannot be collapsed! 3 Expand Now Playing to Full Screen --> Menu can be expanded and collapsed 4 Initiate playback of a new track --> Playing view appears (full screen) and menu can be expanded and collapsed So there are two problems: a) Users cannot collapse the menu in most views resulting in wasted space b) Users are confused about why they can collapse the menu in some cases but not others (this is especially confusing when it comes to the 'Playing' view because users don't realize the 'full screen' vs 'partial screen' distinction. I think that the solution could be for the menu to always be collapsible (just like it is on a phone--the only difference being that on a tablet, Navigation views initially open with the menu Open and menu state should persist). |
