Summary | 0021348: Permissions are still confusing for some users
Description | The current 'Library folders' dialog is much improved, but there are still 2 issues: 1) If folders haven't been granted access (i.e. they appear in red in the Library folders dialog) users try to tap the red folder to correct the problem but nothing happens. If the user taps a red folder, the grant permissions dialog should open so that the user can correct the problem. 2) If the user grants permissions for all folders, but permissions for Music and Audio OR Photos and Video haven't been granted (or have been lost) users don't understand why the library is empty. There should be a warning/shortcut to resolve this problem. e.g. Please grant MediaMonkey the rights to access and edit your media: General permission to access: [icon] Music and Audio . . . . . Grant [icon] Photos and Video . . . . . Grant Access to specific folders used to edit/sync media: [icon] Music... We can discuss the specifics, but basically we need to avoid scenarios in which missing general permissions cause MM to appear to not work. 3) Another area of confusion is that users sometimes don't understand why they can't scan the root folder. It might be useful that when the user clicks the 'add folder' button (from any portion of the UI that exposes this function) that an informational dialog appears along the following lines: Use the system file browser to choose (or create) a folder for MediaMonkey to scan. Note: some system folders such as the 'root' (main) folder cannot be scanned for security reasons. Choose an alternate folder and use your file manager to move your media to the folder. [ ] Don't show this again [OK]

I added a new option to "Library folders" screen. <Allow access to videos> <To scan videos MediaMonkey needs access to the Android video library.> I've added this option with an info icon to avoid misunderstanding that it is related to folders with a red folder icon (related to "Grant access to storage") I am not sure whether this new option shouldn't be moved to Library & Sync/Sync. Verified issues 1) and 2) in build 1221. As to where the permissions should be shown, I think that the current location is best. BUT, that the 'Grant access to storage' warning in 'Library & Sync' should be changed as follows: Instead of showing the warning in that panel, if there's a permission problem, the first entry should change as follows: Choose library folders Choose which folders to include in the library --> Choose library folders Choose which folders to include in the library (!) Correct access permissions (in red) The above is a single entry that links to the 'Choose library folders'. That way all access-related permissions are always managed from the 'Choose library folders' menu, but the user is made aware of the problem at a higher level menu. |

It would be great to use only standard preference items so the additional text cannot be in red. I suggest: (! red icon) Choose library folders Choose which folders to include in the library and correct access permissions. if all permissions are granted the option will be the same as now. |
