Summary0002749: Support for Windows Smartphone synchronization
DescriptionOver the weekend, a friend of mine came over and we wanted to try synching his 2 Windows Smartphones (Motorol MPx220-Windows Mobile 2002 and Qtek-Windows Mobile 2005) with MediaMonkey and neither works.

The former device is registered as a 'Windows USB Sync' device (not sure what that is, but it uses Activesync or Windows Media Player to sync) while the second registers as a 'Generic NDIS' driver (see: http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/device/network/NDIS/rmNDIS.mspx ). Neither of them works with MediaMonkey (at least by default they don't).

I'm not certain of the actual marketshare of Windows Mobile devices as a % of the smartphone market, however, at a minimum, it's at 5%, and growing:

I would propose that this should be supported for MM 3.x.

note: I expect that the same sync driver would work for pocket pc's as well.

Assigning to Rusty in order to find out as much as possible about the phone, particularly if there's any interface that we could use to synchronize both (i.e. as wide range of phones as possible). Feel free to assign to me with a suggestion which phone to buy for development, etc.

Smartphone can be emulated: http://blog.kirupa.com/?p=70

I don't think that the emulator would help much, I doubt that it would properly emulate all the aspects of USB connection, synchronization, etc. Also, it seems the preparation of the testing environment would take some time too.

However, I'm assigning it to myself, I'd like to buy some phone based on WM2005 soon and will try to find out some improvements/solutions then.

This is no longer an interesting project.
