| Description | If you are in the album view, you can click either the album title or the artist title to jump straight to that node. 1: If you click the album title, it jumps to that node but it remains in the album view and therefore only shows one album cover. It should automatically change to the normal tracklist view as the user obviously wants to check what tracks are on the album. 2: If you click the artist link in album view, it jumps to the related artist node. This view CAN have multiple albums in it and therefore should not jump to the normal tracklist view... however, it's possible that one user might click it wanting to see tracks while another user might click it wanting to see albums... therefore, it makes sense that it should jump to the album art 'list' view - which satisfies both. I agree with both of Dale's ideas of what the user expects, however, I think that this can also have an unintended consequence of persisting a change in view. e.g. user is in AA view and clicks Artist=U2 --> view switches to AA+Details view showing all albums. At this point let's say that the user: a) clicks another Artist or Album. b) clicks the 'back' button Should the view revert to AA view? Won't the user be really confused about why MM is switching views? I can't think of a way of implementing this that wouldn't be completely confusing. |

If you want to gauge how confusing this is, you could take a look at itunes 8. It has implemented a feature like this when you are looking at the album art view. If you double click on an image it goes to a new view. I did in fact find this a little confusing at first, however, I attribute this to the fact that you have to double click on the image instead of directly clicking on the artists name - this is the confusing part. - that and the subsequent layout is much hard to interpret and relate to the previous view than in Mediamonkey. Mediamonkey's different views all sit well and similarly within the tracklist space. iTunes' does not and this is one of the things that makes it look a little confusing. I, therefore, do not think that this will be confusing to the user. When they click directly on an item, they will expect a change, and when they click the back button, they always expect to be taken through varying changes that they have previously walked through. HOWEVER, I think that this can be handled via a script quite easily instead of implemented into the main program. I attempted this some time ago with my viewmode script but found a bug in the way MM reported some things. I have officially posted that bug now as bug 0004944 Please check that bug and if it can be addressed then I will be able to make a script which adds that functionality. |
