Summary0004093: Ratings are too easily accidentally modified
DescriptionMany users have complained about the fact that ratings in the tracklist are too easily modified by accident. A user recently suggested a good solution to this issue:

It should be a 2 click setup, not a doubleclick.
1) hover the mouse over the rating stars and nothing happens. First click selects the rating and allows you to pick the rating;
2) Second click sets the rating.

Escape would abort the rating change if you hit it before you do the 2nd click.

I think it's important to consider what the user is most commonly doing when they "accidentally" set the rating.

I would guess that it's not that common from a direct click on a track - when you are clicking on a specific track, you're usually paying attention to where you are clicking and don't click on the rating.

I think it would be most common from when clicking a dragging - as soon as you decided to drag a selection, you fling your mouse to the side click and hold and then drag to select tracks... - you think alot less about where (horizontally) you make your first click.

SOLUTION:
To solve this problem, you need to not set the rating from the initial press of the mouse, but from the release (provided that the press was also over the ratings).
- that should keep the single click ability to rate but also remove alot of accidental rating.

Raising priority due to the number of complaints about this. The simplest and I think best implementation is that of iTunes, where on the fly ratings can only work for the selected track.

note: there shouldn't be any change to how this works in the Player/miniplayer.

There's a problem with the implementation in 1118: if the user selects a track and then tries to rate the track, the ratings work for the first second or so, but after that, the stars turn grey (i.e. it's as if the cursor is no longer over the stars). This needs to be fixed.

EDIT: upon further investigation, this behaviour occurs whenever MM is scanning tracks. It seems that whenever a new track is found, the ratings grey out despite the cursor being on the ratings.

Closing--the remaining scanning-related issue is tracked in 0003880.
