Summary | 0009527: Boxes not selectable in the auto-sync list
Description | Open any device > Auto-sync list tab. 1. Check a collection (ie. Music). The boxes to the right grey out, and are no longer selectable. This can cause a couple problems: a user wants to sync a whole collection minus a few artists. He cannot do so this way, instead he has to select every single artist (in a list of 500 artists, that's 497 clicks instead of 3). Another problem: if a user wants "Artist" playlists auto-generated, it doesn't work because the artist boxes remain unchecked. 2. Instead, you decide to expand the artist node for the collection you want. However, the top level artist node can never be checked! So you still have to select all 497 artists individually. The same applies for all the other categories (album, rating, composer, etc.)

Same problem in the burn wizard, and the issue is two-fold there: 1. Cannot click top level artist/album/genre/rating etc. nodes (they are greyed out, unselectable) 2. At the playlists selection area, you cannot click a top-level playlist to select all the children playlists. Each one has to be checked individually. |
The reason for the current design is that the destination on a device/cd depends on the specific node chosen (e.g. tracks from Artist/U2/Joshua Tree might sync to a different location than tracks from Genre/Rock/(which includes tracks from the Joshua tree). i.e. when selecting an entire collection it implies that all tracks are selected, but it isn't the same as selecting both of the above nodes, which could conceivably sync the tracks to 2 different locations. That said, I'm not sure why we didn't include a checkbox for playlists (to select all of them)--I think this can be added. |
Rusty: Sorry, but I don't understand. How does the destination differ depending on which node is chosen? If your mask is something typical like \Music\<Auto Number>-<Artist>-<Title>, wouldn't all tracks from any collection be named identically? |
I explained it incorrectly--the issue is that playlist synchronization is different depending on which nodes are selected. e.g. if Generate Playlists for [x] Artists will generate playlists for the Artists nodes, whereas Generate Playlists for [x] Albums only generates them for Album nodes that are selected. |
Rusty: I understand that completely. The point is that it's extremely difficult to get these playlists generated, because you can't select the top level "Album" node in order to select every single album in a collection. Each item has to be selected individually. I can't see why it's designed that way. |

Reminder sent to: lowlander, Ludek, peke, rusty I think this needs re-evaluation. |

You're right. Apparently this limitation was included because of performance considerations / implementation complexity. I checked with Ludek, and it is a fairly complex issue that could delay 4.1, so I'll raise the priority for post 4.1. Note to devs: although selection by Album/Genre/etc. is implemented in the manner that it is in order to allow for creation of Playlists depending on what is selected, the limitation pointed out by Stephen affects all users. i.e. if a user wants to sync all Albums except for a few, they can't. |
