Summary | 0009581: Several home screen / now playing icons are unclear
Description | As of build 15, several icons need to be updated because they are either confusing or too generic: a) Artists icon: Should show an icon of a person/people instead of a microphone. A mic isn't really representative of Artists. b) Composers icon: Might show a Person (same as above, but with a pen/conductor's stick) OR a music and pen icon. A Guitar isn't really representative of 'Composer'. c) Genres icon: This currently looks like an 'edit' icon. Any better ideas? d) Audiobooks: Currently has an 'edit' icon. Can be changed to the 'microphone' icon from a) or better yet, a book (with a mic superimposed?). e) Podcasts: Needs new icon (standard RSS podcast icon would be fine).

Further review of the UI shows a few more icons that could use improvement: f) In the Now Playing>Track view a triangular 'Play' icon is used to switch to Album view, however, it looks like a 'Play' command rather than a means of switching a view. The icon should be indicative of an Album cover instead. g) The four cornered 're-order' arrows (for playlists and Now Playing list) look like buttons rather than drag handles (when i tried it, I was trying to click it to see what it does and couldn't figure it out). In addition, drag handles are usually represented pretty consistently across different mobile platforms via stylized vertical bar(s) (which have the additional benefit of taking up less horizontal space). h) In any browser view (e.g. Albums) if an item is selected, the context bar shows an icon of the four pointed arrows (same as g) for 'Properties'. This isn't the correct icon for this. Instead the 'Edit' (pencil) icon should be used for editing properties (see item c above). i) The multi-select icon doesn't look like a selection icon. Wouldn't it make sense to just have a checkbox that is aligned above all the other checkboxes to perform multi-select? |

New issue: j)The 'MediaMonkey' icon that appears in the 'tray' is: - too large on a phone (Gingerbread), but slightly smaller than other tray icons on a tablet (Jellybean) - stands out too much on a phone (it's white), but greyed out (looks better) on a tablet - might benefit from an overlay of a Play icon |
|
b) changed to pen c) well, I think that the current icon is the best possible. Because a labels/stickers are great representative for genres. Genre is tag or label of music. g) fixed i) well this icon is a standard icon for "Select All" in Android, but sure...we can change it to checkbox... |
|
k) "Shuffle all" icon in action bar should be replaced with white version. |
|
Re. c) Labels/stickers are good representation for genres. The problem is that when I show it to most people, they think it's a pencil! i) Could we leave it almost as is but show a checkmark on 1 or 2 of the squares? k) Agreed re white, but I would prefer that it be a Play icon with a small 'shuffle' icon overlaid. |
|
c) I rotated the icon, so it looks very similar to 'Tag' icon in GMail |

To summarize the remaining issues (that aren't tracked in other bugs), listed in order of priority: a) Artists icon: change to a person (since a mic isn't representative of artist) j) MediaMonkey icon: this may be a functional issue for marek The 'MediaMonkey' icon that appears in the 'tray' is: - too large on a phone (Gingerbread), but slightly smaller than other tray icons on a tablet (Jellybean) - stands out too much on a phone (it's white), but greyed out (looks better) on a tablet - might benefit from an overlay of a Play icon d) Audiobooks icon (music note isn't required) i) Multi-select icon: make it look more like a multi-select icon by having 1 or 2 of the checkboxes in the icon selected |

I think j) is the last issue. The following text is related only to API 3.0 and higher. I tried it on ICS tablet and JB phone and it looks ok. Please note that icons have exactly the recommended size: http://developer.android.com/design/style/iconography.html - scroll down to notification icons It can look that way because its more wider than higher (arms of monkey). So the circle has to be smaller than other circle icons. Please note that some devices can have branded system so the colors of icons are different than in clean Android. So the system icons can look differently. But system is changing the color of notification internally. Extract from the site: "Notification icons must be entirely white. Also, the system may scale down and/or darken the icons." I attached screenshots. Both screenshots are made on clean Android ROMs with pure Android look. Please attach screenshots from problematic HC, JB or ICS devices too. On GB and earlier versions, it is a different situation. The icon will be changed according to older specification that I found. |

Re. j) Please have a look at the image from the Xperia Pro to see what I mean. The image really is bigger and whiter (and as you can see, other app icons seem to display correctly). |
|
j) I know but this is Gingerbread. The previous note was only about Honeycomb and higher. I thought that there was some issues too. As I wrote for GB - the icons are now changed according to specification for this APIs - fixed in build 46 |
