Summary0001330: Volume Leveling: Album Gain
DescriptionIt should be possible for MM to calculate Album gain tags when multiple tracks that are part of a single album are analyzed at once.

This would require configuration for both analysis and playback since the user would have to decide when to use Album Gain vs Track gain.

I'd propose to increase priority of this since MM 3.0 will have quite some enhancements in the area of sound quality (and options available) and it would really please audio experts.

I suppose that analyzation part would be automatic, i.e. album gain would be analyzed if all tracks of album are being analyzed (otherwise it would remain empty - unanalyzed).

As for configuration part, I think we could show somewhere something like this:

Level track volume using:
 [ ] Track Gain
 [o] Album Gain
 [ ] Let MM choose

The last option would use Album Gain when there are several consecutive tracks in Now Playing from the same album, otherwise Track Gain would be used (not sure if it's a good idea, but maybe yes).

Per discussion:

For analysis:

a) MM could be configured to either analyse track gain, or album and track gain. This could be done via a single entry in the 'General' section described in bug 0001132:
[ ] When analyzing Track volume, also analyze Album volume

b)In cases where volume is analysed manually, MM should only analyze Album volume if at least 3 consecutive tracks from a single album have been selected, beginning with track #1. In cases where volume is analysed automatically, MM needs to check to see whether other tracks that are part of the album in question exist in the library, and if at least the first 3 tracks exist, then Album Volume should be (re)calculated for tracks on the album.

c) For volume leveling on playback: To elaborate on your proposal:
[ ] Level playback volume: ___________^ (Always use Track volume, Use Album volume if available, Let MediaMonkey choose)

d) For Track leveling: we need to decide whether we want to support Album Gain or not. I would propose that we can defer this.

e) For the main panel: the terminology should be changed from Volume Leveling to Track Volume, and a new column should be added for Album Volume.

Fixed in build 1011. All implemented as discussed, except for:
 b) It calculates Album Gain for any number of tracks (>1), but only if all tracks of the album that are in Library are selected for analyzation. Any other algorithm would probably make more bad than good.
 c) 'Let MediaMonkey choose' wasn't implemented (yet), I'm not sure exactly what are users' needs here, let's wait for some feedback and decide then.
 e) Maybe there are some other places where terminology shold be changed, I haven't checked.

bi) If the user selects a subset of tracks on an album for leveling, it currently appears as if the operation was successful, when in reality, Album Gain information is missing from the selected tracks! I suggest that MM should prompt the user about the existence of other tracks from the album and allow them to be selected for inclusion (with a don't show this again option so that this is done automatically in the future).

ci) I agree we can push the 'smart' leveling.

cii) In the main panel users should be able to easily switch between Track Gain and Album Gain. i.e.
 Player > Level Playback volume
-->
Player > Level Playback volume (per Track)
Player > Level Playback volume (per Album)

ciii) Terminology in the level volume dialog:
Level playback volume: Always use Track volume, use Album volume if available
--->
Level playback volume: per Track, per Album

e) In the main panel, the headers terminology isn't good since it the column is usually truncated and 'Volume' doesn't appear and because 'Album Volume' implies that this is a measure of the albums volume rather than a measure of deviation:

Track volume --> Volume gain (Track)
Album volume --> Volume gain (Album)

bi) I don't think that this is necessary, it is relatively logical and a brief explanation in help should be enough (I suppose that there will be much more things people will ask about leveling). Also, this becomes completely a non-issue for people using automatic leveling on background...

cii) For me this sounds like making the feature too complex - ordinary users don't need this switch and audiophiles probably too don't need to switch this too often. So I wouldn't do this, or at least not until we get some feedback about it.

ciii) Done, although I'm not sure if it's the right choice: Strictly technically speaking this isn't correct, but hopefully it will be understood correctly.

e) It seems to me that this change is making it even worse - both columns have to be wider and the most important information (Track or Album) is only shown when the column would be fully shown.
