Summary | 0001612: Album Art Views
Description | Now that Album Art is supported, it would be nice to be able to browse music by Album Pictures (jukebox style). Jiri's suggestion was that this could be done via the Library|Albums node.

Assigned to Petr for a review of technical options we have in implementation of this. More complete specification will be created then. |

Here are a couple of direct links to products offering this type of functionality: http://www.jrmediacenter.com/features.html http://albumbrowser.galleytech.com/ http://www.albumplayer.com/index.htm http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/player/11/default.aspx At a high level, I think that the key requirements are: -It's easy to switch in and out of this mode without having to adjust all of the various windows -There's enough screen real estate available to see a lot of albums at once -The Albums are displayed with key metadata (Artist, Title, Average Track Rating) -The details of an album should be viewable via tooltips -There should be a graphic for displaying albums without covers -Albums are sortable -Albums are easily filterable and searchable (e.g. using the tree, or iTunes-style browser, or search bar) In terms of implementation, I would only want to mention that accessing this functionality should be via some sort of 'View' or other menu option (versus a new node in the tree specific to this view), since this is really just a different means of presenting information already in the library. |
Not sure if you want any feedback at this stage, but I'll give it since it's better now than later. 1) I would suggest that metadata should be limited to a single colum. It's much more valuable for the user to see more albums on a single screen. 2) It's unclear from the screen cap whether this mode applies only to the Albums view or to other views as well. I would hope that it can apply to other views as well. E.g. User clicks Artist U2 and then all Album Art for U2 appears. 3) The headers don't really map to what's in the columns--they're effecively used only for sorting purposes. Since we don't need column headers in this view, I wonder if we might want to take another approach to sorting (e.g. Html at the top 'Sort by: __Artist__ __Album__ __Year__ __Genre__ etc.) in this view and get rid of the headers completely. |
I just had a look at build 2005. I really like the down arrow for expanding the view of tracks, however, using the build only confirms my initial reservations. I would like to be able to see many more albums on any given screen. Note that if you feel strongly about including the list of tracks, then I would suggest including whatever number of tracks fits below the 'Average Rating', and then we could fit 3 columns of Album Art and metadata (instead of 1). |
I think that it's a matter of personal preferrence, I don't like multi column album art mode, although you can view more album art at once it's harder to find what you are looking for. Therefore, I'd like to have two modes, one similar to what we currently have as a preview, and another where only album art is shown - in as many columns as possible. |
basic sorting functionality is implemented, and cover reading is moved into thread. |
Looks good, and seems to be functioning nicely. A few significant items (some already discussed via e-mail, but that we should track in mantis): 1) Sorting in 'Multiple albums in row' mode: If we use the header bar, then headers should generally have the relevant content beneath them. Suggested layout if we decide to use the header bar: ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- [Album U2 1 She's running to stand still 1990 **** 3:30 Art] The Joshua Tree 2 Where the streets have no name 1990 **** 4:50 3 MLK 1990 **** 2:50 The benefits of using this approach are that it's very conducive to allowing on-screen edits. 2) Sorting in the 'Multiple albums per row' mode We should use a sort selector as Jiri described: Headers are there only for sorting, not for resizing of columns and overall look a little disturbing there. Since users will in most cases want sorting by album name, a simple right-click menu 'Sort by' with subitems like Artist, Album, ... would serve well. 3) Application of Album Art mode to more than just the Album Node. I would have expected that this mode could apply to almost all nodes. As suggested by Jiri: there should be 3 modes, one the current standard track list and two album art modes, as currently implemented by Petr. There should be a switch on toolbar, similar to the one at WMP11. (note: requires 3 new icons). This also implies that 'Album Art View' can be removed from the View menu. 4) Cursor on Album art should trigger metadata to appear in tooltip. When the user focuses on Album Art for a few seconds, track info should appear in a tooltip. We can re-use the implementation from bug 0000519. 5) Whenever the Album Art is selected, there's a graphical glitch--the top 1/16 and the 4 rows of pixels above the album art do not appear to be selected. 6) Context menus currently inactive. 7) In-place editing doesn't work. 8) Very often, NO album art appears for any tracks in my collection (even though thousands of tracks have album art). Sometimes only a few tracks that should have album art are missing it. I've been able to reproduce this as follows: -select an album that doesn't have album art. -tag the album with album art -switch to View Album Art -->All albums don't have art! I don't know if this is a problem in the implementation, or if its a manifestation of previously reported problems from users in which Album Art spontaneously disappears. |
Some ideas: - Some functionality of our Album art window could be added so that user could: - Change visible album art (from front cover to back cover, etc.) - Open album art in a larger window - Add album art for albums that don't have it yet - Add some 3D-like effect around album covers so that they look better (like in WMP). Not necessary, but would be nice. - Drag&drop of whole albums doesn't work (should work as dragging of all tracks of the album). - Mouse wheel scrolls by 3 lines (on my PC). I think that one step should always be 1 album art line in this mode (in other modes it should remain as is). - Double click doesn't start playback in Album Art with details mode. |
solved all except adding album art and 3D-like effect |
Album Art editing is tracked in 2997. 3D view for album art can be post 3.0. There are still a few other core issues that are problematic with this functionality: (9) In most Album Art view/node combinations, the user cannot sort by many of the columns (10) User cannot add columns to display (or sort by) other attributes. (11) In some nodes (e.g. Titles node) the sort order is unclear (no indication). (12) In the Album Art-Details view (and sometimes in the Album Art Icon view), tracks are sometimes grouped as an album _even_when_ the sort order is something other than Album. In other words, all the tracks in an album are included even though they don't match the selected criteria. e.g. In title node or Genre node, all the items in an Album are included even if they don't match the Title or Genre grouping. All of the tracks in an Album should be associated with an instance of the Album Art ONLY if ALL of the following criteria are satisfied: -The selected node includes all the tracks in the album -The active grouping includes all the tracks in the album -The active quicksearch/album browser filter includes all the tracks in the album Note: this also implies that there will be more than one instance of Album Art for a given album in many cases. (13)The means by which tracks are grouped is confusing. To make this more obvious, tracks should be grouped based on the selected primary sort order. e.g. if the user selects Genre node, but then sorts by Rating, the grouping should be changed to Rating. The selected view can be used to enable grouping but should NOT AFFECT what grouping is used. (14) Each node should persist it's own view and header settings (15) Each node should persist group expansion settings (e.g. if the user collapses a,b,c groups and then switches to another node and back, the a,b,c groups should still be collapsed. (16) Double-clicking a track in Album Art + Details view --> first track on the album plays (instead of the selected track). This occurs when the track is on an Album that isn't yet playing. (17) When you press next on the player, the album views doesn't get the bold text of the playing text before you move your mouse over to that part of the window. This only occurs on Vista. (18) When you select a track title that extends beyond the right margin of the Tracklist, the contents of the tracklist move to the left. This is very annoying since it causes all of the Album Art to disappear. |

How much is resolved/still missing in this issue? |

Added support for all columns (sorting is implemented only for some of them - album, album artist, year, rating) |
Fixed items 9, 10, 12, 13, 16, 17. |

Fixed. Will be in 1077. |

Closing. Remaining issues are being tracked in individual bugs. |
